The Vikings’ Brave New World Soundscape

The Vikings’ Brave New World is a new soundscape created for the JORVIK Viking Festival 2015. JORVIK teamed up with members of Converge, York St John University’s arts education partnership with local mental health service providers.

Over 50 participants contributed new music and poetry to explore the idea of a Viking journey. Sounds incorporated into the journey include hurdy-gurdy, guitar and whistles.  Choral contributions are provided by the Communitas choir.   Everyday materials used in the soundscape include bubble wrap, popped to create the sound of crackling fires!  Participants worked with community musicians Chris Bartram and Matt Dawson and visited the JORVIK Viking Centre to discover more about life in York 1000 years ago.
